Mt Victoria Lookout
Mt Victoria Lookout Point at the top of Mt Victoria (643 feet/196 meters) has panoramic views over Wellington harbour and the city.
You can drive all the way up to the top, following signs. From the carpark, walk up a short flight of steps leading up to the lookout. If you haven't got access to a car, you can catch bus 20 (Mondays to Fridays), from the train station or Courtenay Place. You can also walk (~1.5 hrs) up as part of the Southern Walkway.
Standing just below Mt Victoria lookout Richard Byrd Memorial is a monument erected to the American polar explorer and aviator Richard Byrd who based himself in New Zealand for his Antarctic expeditions for 27 years and came to regard the country as his second home. The monument is in the form of a polar tent, the front of which is made up of rocks from Antarctica. Richard Byrd's memorial stands as a symbol of enduring friendship between the United States and New Zealand.
Definitely worth a trip up here either in the day or at night, to gaze over the city of Wellington.
