NB The Petone Settlers Museum is temporarily closed until the end of July 2010 for a refurbishment project.
The Petone Settlers Museum occupies a unique historic site on Petone foreshore, and is a memorial to the 1840 landing of the first organised settlers in the country.
The museum’s exhibitions and programmes focus on immigration, cultural diversity, industry and the social history of the Hutt Valley.
Refreshed every four to five months, a host of semi-permanent multi-media exhibitions spotlight, or detail certain parts of the museum’s permanent exhibition on the life of early settlers.
As well as holding a large collection of historic pieces, the Petone Settlers Museum’s collection contains original passenger lists dating back to 1839 and photographs of early immigrants to New Zealand.
For a small fee, visitors can obtain print-outs and photographs from this passenger database.
Running alongside the exhibitions, are a series of high-quality curriculum-based programmes to complement classroom learning.
Designed to meet curriculum objectives for all levels, the education programmes cater for all students from early primary through to senior secondary.
Several resource kits exploring themes of migration and settlement are also available for loan and classroom use.
Admission free, donations welcomed. Available free parking.
